Surprise Me!

Excerpt of the month:

…You ought to plan for an active work life even if there is no need for financial rewards because many other positive factors, including the eternal human urge to contribute something, call for a positive and practical retirement career planning.

Admittedly, I am somewhat prejudiced towards working during later years but this propensity, perhaps bias, stems from the real life success stories of seniors, who made the most of their later years. To stay active and connected is the secret of these wise people to enjoy the best possible health. They know that a post-retirement career can improve a person’s physical, emotional, financial and mental well-being.

Just think about what motivates business leaders like Ratan Tata, Azim Premji and N R Narayan Murthy to actively engage in social causes to make a difference in people’s lives. Why they are passionate about their work on issues they feel most strongly about? Because they find spreading happiness around more fulfilling than retirement. That is why they are so passionate about what they do!

When someone asked Amitabh Bachchan on his 71st birthday about his retirement plans, he replied, “I want to work till my last breath.” Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, one of India’s most loved presidents, kept inspiring people till his last breath. He breathed his last while doing what he loved most – teaching.

You too can find many such exemplars if you look around. I want you to press the accelerator more often than the brakes even in your later years. You may switch to a more reliable vehicle, i.e. work of your choice, but move ahead. …
